Toyota Carlsbad wishes everyone a safe and Happy New Year!

Happy-new-year

Exciting new Scion vehicles to roll out at Scion Carlsbad in the new year

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Ever since its inception, the Scion brand has been known for hip, edgy cars built with Toyota reliability and fuel efficiency and, in 2012, they are adding two new models to the mix—a premium micro sub-compact and a high-performance sports coupe.

First, the sub-compact Scion iQ. At ten feet long, it is a 2-door, 3+1 seater with a 1.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that makes 94 horsepower and 89 pound-feet of torque. This car is for the urban drivers who want to get great gas mileage and not take up a lot of space on the road. It's cute, it's fun and it's safe with 11 air bags as standard equipment and the world's first rear window air bag. Some other safety features include anti-lock brakes, traction control and a tire pressure monitoring system. The standard equipment on all iQs is air conditioning, power windows, locks and mirrors, Bluetooth, HD radio and CD player with USB input.

Next up is the new Scion FR-S. This compact high-performance sports coupe features rear-wheel drive, a low center of gravity and a lightweight design to achieve “Pure Balance.” FR-S stands for Front-engine, Rear-wheel  drive, Sport. The FR-S is designed around the core goal of achieving “Pure Balance” which begins with the strategic use of the world’s only flat boxer engine in a front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration. The engine’s compact size and flat shape allow it to be mounted mid-ship and extremely low, giving the car a dynamically favorable front-to-rear weight ratio of 53:47 and a low center of gravity comparable to some exotic supercars.

The idea of “Pure Balance” is further realized by the FR-S’s lightweight design and compact size. The combination allows the car to be quick and nimble into and out of corners, with dynamic maneuverability and confident handling. The coupe’s weight is kept to a minimum by utilizing an aluminum hood, a solid roof, and by featuring a trunk design instead of a hatchback.

You will be able to find both of these cars, plus the full line-up of Scion models at Scion Carlsbad—the fourth-largest volume Scion store in the nation. The Scion line includes the 2012 Scion tC, xB and xD, which have all been named the “Top Safety Pick” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Right now, all active military personnel as well as new college graduates qualify for a $1,000 rebate on all Scion models if they finance through Toyota Financial Services at Scion Carlsbad. For more information, visit www.scioncarlsbad.com or call (866) 963-3433. Scion Carlsbad is located in Car Country Carlsbad at I-5 and Cannon Road exit.

Statement from Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., Regarding the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Five-Star Composite Rating for All-New 2012 Camry

We are very pleased that the all-new 2012 Camry has earned a five-star composite safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The fact that the Camry earned this five-star overall score after enduring a more rigorous NHTSA testing procedure targeted at raising the bar for overall vehicle safety is testament to the strong design, and safety-focused engineering consumers can expect in the nation’s top-selling car.
The redesigned 2012 Camry features a reinforced body structure that utilizes high-strength steel construction to help withstand cabin deformity during certain severe collisions, absorb impact energies and help enhance occupant safety. Each Camry is also equipped with a class-leading 10 standard airbags to help protect occupants in the event of a collision. Like all Toyota models, the 2012 Camry is equipped with Toyota’s Star Safety System™ standard, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. The Star Safety System™ also features the standard Smart Stop Technology brake-override system, and a tire pressure monitoring system as standard equipment.
Vehicle safety and the development of technologies that forward the safety mission, such as Camry's available Blind Spot Monitor, remain a priority at Toyota.   Our designers and engineers will continue their efforts toward occupant safety, and, in doing so, help raise the bar for vehicle safety industry-wide.

Two Toyota Leaders Named Automotive News All-Stars

Toyota Motor Sales Customer Services Group Vice President Fletcher Davidson and Toyota Motor Corporation Executive Vice President Shinichi Sasaki were named two of 20 Automotive News 2011 All-Stars this week. Davidson was named the “Service and Parts” All-Star for leading a “quick-response team that moved logistical mountains to ensure a smooth flow of repair parts to U.S. dealers” after the massive March 11 earthquake/tsunami heavily damaged Toyota suppliers in Japan. Sasaki was cited as the “Purchasing” All-Star for swiftly narrowing Toyota’s post-earthquake parts problems from 1,200 to just 30 in one month.

Toyota Continues Normal Production at its North American Plants

Toyota announced that its North American plants would continue operating on a normal production schedule, including overtime and Saturday production, through Dec. 17. Toyota's Thailand plants reopened on Nov. 21 and the company's Japan plants are operating at near-normal levels, including overtime. Decisions regarding future production schedules will be made based on an ongoing assessment of the parts supply situation at each individual production line.

Fast and Fierce: Scion FR-S Premieres

Scion
With the grip and grit of a passionate performer, the 2013 Scion FR-S was revealed Wednesday (Nov. 30) at a Hollywood event for media and enthusiasts.

The long-awaited sports car boasts a flat 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine that delivers 200 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft torque at 6,600 rpm. The engine, which incorporates Toyota’s D4-S injection system, mates with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Power is put to the pavement via a limited-slip differential.

The FR-S connects to the road with lightweight 17-inch wheels. The lightweight design and short 101.2-inch wheelbase combine for nimble cornering and that fun-to-drive spirit championed by Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda.

FR-S stands for Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive Sport, and styling is as sporty as performance. The roof has a gull-wing shape, channeling air flow smoothly over the car. The metal is menacing, the stance sinister. The face features sharp lines, a wide mouth and fierce headlights.

Inside, seats are comfortable, yet assertive. The large center-mounted tachometer is all business, keeping the driver informed of the engine’s vitals. The car offers 2+2 seating and a fold-flat cargo area large enough to transport a full set of race-spec tires, a floor jack and the pit tools needed for a fun day at the track.

A true scion, the FR-S is rooted in the AE86 Corolla, which made its way into almost every genre of racing. The affordable new sportster makes its way into dealerships this spring – a superb daily driver and weekend warrior for enthusiasts whose appliances are in the kitchen, not the garage.

Toyota Prius Family of Vehicles Receive GreenCarReports' '2012 Best Green Car to Buy' Award

TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 28, 2011 – GreenCarReports.com has named the 2012 Toyota Prius family of vehicles as its “Best Green Car to Buy 2012.” Beginning with the 2012 model year, the Prius will expand to a family of four vehicles, including the third-generation Prius Liftback, the Prius v, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, and the Prius c.

GreenCarReports editors choose the most significant new “green” car available to shoppers during the 2012 model year, taking into account new technologies, their practicality, and their impact on the environment. The GreenCarReports’ “Best Green Car to Buy” award recognizes mass-market, environmentally sensitive vehicles that are available below $60,000. Utilizing the TheCarConnection’s ratings as a starting point for their evaluation, the GreenCarReports editorial team applies their criteria to select the winner that will carry the “Best Green Car to Buy 2012” environmental message.

“The Prius is more than just one car this year,” said Green Car Reports Editor John Voelcker. “With a new Prius v and the Prius Plug-In Hybrid, it’s now a family of vehicles with some of the highest gas mileage on the market today, and the Prius name is likely to help encourage buyers to take the plunge into plug-in vehicles."

The Prius vehicles that won the GreenCarReports’ “Best Green Car to Buy 2012” award were chosen from a competitive field of environmentally sensitive cars that also included the Fiat 500, Honda Civic Hybrid, Infiniti M35h, Mitsubishi i, and Volkswagen Passat TDi.

The Prius Liftback is in its third generation and earned an EPA-estimated 50 mpg combined (51 city mpg/ 48 highway mpg) rating. The Prius v, which went on sale in October, will be an unmatched combination of versatility and fuel efficiency in a midsize. With 58-percent more cargo space than the Liftback, the Prius v has more cargo space than 80-percent of the small SUVs on the road today, while still accomplishing an EPA-estimated 44-mpg city.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid, which offers seating for five, is expected to achieve a manufacturer-estimated 87 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) in combined driving and 49 MPG in hybrid mode. With expected class-leading fuel economy better than 50 mpg in the city, which is the highest city mpg of any non-plug-in vehicle, the Prius c will be an entry into the Prius Family appealing to youthful shoppers seeking fuel efficiency, technology, and spirited driving dynamics in the subcompact segment. Both the Prius c and Prius Plug-in will go on sale in the spring of 2012.

The Prius vehicles rely on Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive, which benefits from 14 years of global market development, and pairs a highly efficient gasoline internal combustion engine with two high-output motor/generators, a large rechargeable battery, and an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission to help the vehicles attain class-leading fuel economy in their respective segments. The development of the systems that govern the operation, integration and regenerative capabilities of the Hybrid Synergy Drive system represent considerable engineering effort, and help enhance the efficiency and performance of succeeding generations of Hybrid Synergy Drive equipped vehicles.

Toyota Corolla Adds New Audio and Amenities for 2012

2012_corolla
The Toyota Corolla, which received refreshed styling and numerous enhancements for 2011, enters the 2012 model year with upgrades to the feature content for the base L model and a new standard audio system for the LE and S grade models.

A standard bearer for value, quality and dependability for more than 40 years, the Toyota Corolla delivers even more value for 2012. The Corolla L grade model gains color-keyed power side mirrors, along with power windows with driver’s auto-down, power door locks and remote keyless entry. The LE grade adds standard 16-inch wheels and steering wheel audio controls for 2012. The sporty S model adds a double-stitch accent to its seats.

In response to customers’ demand for more versatile audio performance, the 2012 Toyota LE and S grades offer a new standard audio system. The head unit combines an AM/FM/CD player (including MP3/WMA playback) A USB port enables iPod® connectivity, while an auxiliary input jack accommodates other music players. The system also features Bluetooth® hands-free phone capability and audio streaming. Auto-sound leveling adjusts volume in response to ambient noise. Both the LE and S grades feature steering wheel audio control switches, as well.

The 2012 Corolla continues to offer standard Toyota’s Star Safety System™, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. It also features the standard Smart Stop Technology brake-override system. The 2012 Corolla continues to offer the two-year/25,000-mile Toyota Care complimentary maintenance plan.

Performance and Efficiency
The 2012 Corolla is available in three grades: the base-model Corolla L, the LE, and sporty S grade. All models are equipped with the 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine, which produces 132 hp at 6,000 rpm and 128 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) controls valve timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts to help optimize performance and fuel economy.

The 1.8-liter engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic Electronically Controlled Transmission (ECT) on the base Corolla L and the sporty S grades; the LE model features the automatic standard. The four-speed automatic uses a torque converter with flex lockup for increased fuel efficiency, as well as uphill/downhill shift control. For a more engaging driving experience, the driver can shift the automatic manually by moving the shift lever to the left from its “D” position into the “S” position, then pushing forward for upshifts and back for downshifts. An indicator inside the combination gauge shows the gear selected.

The 2012 Corolla has earned an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 27 mpg city and 34 mpg highway with the five-speed manual transmission, and 26 mpg city and 34 mpg highway with the four-speed automatic transmission.

Handling and Ride
The smooth-riding Corolla is built around a stiff body structure that relies on high tensile-strength steel, gussets and cross members for its strength, rigidity and lightweight construction. Front suspension is composed of a compact, rigid L-arm-type MacPherson strut with a stabilizer bar. The Corolla’s torsion beam rear suspension employs a coil-over-shock arrangement that allows efficient packaging along with solid handling and excellent ride comfort.

An electric power-assist steering system uses a compact motor, speed reducer and torque sensor built into the steering column. The system varies the amount of assistance according to engine RPM and vehicle speed. The result is appropriate weight and responsiveness at higher speeds, and light effort at low speeds. Electric power steering reduces parasitic losses to the engine, thereby aiding fuel economy. It is also environmentally efficient, because it does not require hydraulic oil.

Safety
The Corolla is engineered to absorb and disperse impact energy throughout the entire body structure, including front and rear crumple zones. Strengthened door beltline reinforcements help share the impact load, which in side impacts is also directed to the underbody. A direct tire pressure monitor system comes standard on every Corolla.

As part of the Toyota STAR Safety System™, Vehicle Stability Control automatically adjusts engine output and the vehicle’s braking force at individual wheels to help control any discrepancy between where the driver is steering and where the vehicle is heading.

All Corolla models are equipped with six standard airbags, including advanced front airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, and front-and-rear side-curtain airbags. Seatbelt pretensioners retract the seat belt at the time of a frontal collision, and the dual-stage force limiter helps limit the seat belt force applied to the passenger’s chest. Front seats integrate active headrests; if the vehicle is struck from the rear with sufficient force, a cable-actuated mechanism in the active front headrest moves the headrest upward and forward to help limit the movement of the occupant's head.

Comfort and Convenience
The 2012 Corolla upholds a 40-plus year heritage for providing outstanding value in standard equipment. All models feature a standard all-weather package. The Corolla L grade features 15-inch steel wheels with full wheel covers; P195/65 R15 tires; a color-keyed front grille and exterior door handles; a heavy-duty rear window defogger with timer; AM/FM/CD audio with four speakers with MP3/WMA playback capability, auxiliary audio jack, and auto sound leveling; air conditioning with pollen filter; intermittent windshield wipers; daytime running lights; tilt and telescopic steering wheel; multi-information display with outside temperature, instant fuel economy, average fuel economy, average speed and travel distance; fabric-trimmed six-way adjustable drivers seat; four-way adjustable front passenger seat; 60/40 split folding rear seats and a 12-volt auxiliary power outlet. For 2012, power windows, door locks, remote keyless entry system, and color-keyed side view mirrors are also added to the roster.

In addition to the new audio system and 16-inch wheels described described earlier, the popular Corolla LE grade adds variable intermittent windshield wipers with mist cycle; color-keyed power heated outside mirrors; cruise control; multi-function in-key remote keyless entry system with lock, unlock, trunk release, panic and remote illuminated entry and a sport steering wheel with metallic accents.

The sporty Corolla S grade projects a street-smart look with 16-inch alloy wheels and 205/55 R16 tires; multi-reflector halogen headlamps with black housing; color-keyed front and rear underbody spoilers, sport side rocker panels, unique S badge and rear mudguards; color-keyed rear spoiler and integrated fog lamps. The interior, too, gets an exclusive upgrade with front sport seats, chrome-tipped exhaust, metallic style interior trim and analog sport instrumentation.

Options
The Corolla LE offers a Premium Package that includes 16-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels with P205/55R16 tires; integrated fog lamps and a power tilt/slide moonroof with sliding sunshade. The Corolla S also offers the power tilt/slide moonroof. Both grades also offer Display Audio with Navigation and Entune™ multi-media system which includes a 6.1-in. touch screen, AM/FM CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability, six speakers, SiriusXM™ Satellite Radio capability that includes 90-day trial subscription, HD Radio™ with iTunes® Tagging, auxiliary audio jack, USB port with iPod® connectivity and control, vehicle information, hands-free phone capability, phonebook access, advanced voice recognition, text to voice, and music streaming via Bluetooth® wireless technology (see toyota.com/entune for availability of apps and data services)

Exterior Design
The Corolla’s design, created with input from styling studios in Turin, Italy, strikes a sporty profile. Built on a 102.4-inch wheelbase, the Corolla provides room for five, with a 12.3 cu. ft. trunk.

Character lines sweep from the hood toward the A-pillars and carry back from the top edge of the front bumper into the subtle yet muscular front-fender flares. Additional lines carry rearward at the level of the door handles, emphasizing the Corolla’s low profile, and sweep down from the C-pillar and along the top edges of the rear fenders.

Just above the dense mesh grille that helps form the now familiar Toyota T-face, an interlayer of anti-chipping coating is used to help minimize paint damage from stone chips. The standard body kit on S the model adds a sporty look while also enhancing aerodynamics. The kit includes a front spoiler, rocker moldings, and upper and lower rear spoilers. Engine under-covers improve air management on all models.

The current-generation Corolla benefitted from a focus on reducing wind noise. The A-pillar is specially profiled for this purpose. The windshield is made from acoustic glass and the window-frame structure is designed to reduce vibration of side glass. The windshield molding, wiper blade covers and shape of the cowl air intake louvers are all designed to minimize noise. Windshield washer nozzles are partially shielded by the rear edge of the hood, instead of sitting atop the hood or cowling. Inside, the carpeting is designed to better absorb noise.

Interior Design
The Corolla’s driving position and front seats are tailored to a wider range of driver heights. A standard tilt and telescope steering wheel in all models makes it easy for taller drivers to find a comfortable position. A multi-information display presents a variety of information, including outside temperature, instant fuel economy, average fuel economy, average speed and travel distance.

The Corolla’s rear bench seat offers space and comfort for three adults. Careful attention to exhaust system routing provides a nearly flat rear floor, enhancing comfort for the middle passenger. Three interior color schemes are available: Ash, Dark Charcoal and Bisque. The Bisque is paired with Ash Brown trim.

Easy-to-reach storage spaces provide convenience and usability inside the Corolla. These include center console side pockets; a storage box above the usual glove box; front and rear door pockets that can safely hold 20-ounce bottles; a console box with a large-capacity main tray and a smaller accessory tray; an overhead console useful for storage of sunglasses or garage-door openers; and front and rear-door storage pockets with sculpted bottle holders.

Limited Warranty
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation.

Review 2

"I am so stoked on my new Tundra!! This is our 4th purchase at Toyota of Carlsbad and Scott Busby is the man! Scott knows us sooo well, that he had our truck already picked out for us when we got there. He picked exactly the truck we need to accommodate our family of six. I had no choice but to bring my three year old daughter, who he was happy to make hot chocolate for! Not to mention I didn't have time to get my own coffee before hand , and was greeted with a hot Starbucks just how I like it:) He was efficient with our time and respectful of our hectic schedule. Scott is honest, enthusiastic, and truly a pleasure to work with at a time that could have been so stressful! Toyota Is Ranked No. 1 in Customer Satisfaction

Brand Surges to Top of American Customer Satisfaction Index for 2011

Tsc-graph
As a sign that consumer perception of the brand is recovering from the challenges of recalls in 2010,
Toyota posted a score of 87 out of a possible 100 to tie Lexus and Cadillac atop the recently released American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) for 2011. After slipping from a score of 86 in 2009 to 84 in 2010, Toyota improved by three points in 2011 to move to the top of the rankings. Even more impressive, Toyota is the only non-luxury brand among the ACSI’s top five, which also includes Lincoln and Mercedes-Benz. Among Toyota’s direct competitors, Honda came in at No. 6, Nissan at No. 7 and Hyundai at No. 11. The ACSI is a national economic indicator of customer evaluations of the quality of products and services available to U.S. household consumers. Data from interviews with approximately 70,000 customers annually are used as inputs into an econometric model to measure satisfaction with more than 225 companies in 47 industries and 10 economic sectors, as well as
more than 130 federal government programs, agencies and websites. The index was founded at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. More information on the ACSI can be found at

Toyota Provides Environmental Learning Experience in Costa Rica for 26 U.S. Educators

Twenty-six U.S. teachers have been selected to travel to Costa Rica through the Toyota International Teacher Program. Taking place November 19 – December 3, 2011, the program will provide educators with unique learning experiences to help them encourage and inspire their own students to become more involved in environmental, cultural and world studies.

Now in its13th year, the program has sent more than 650 educators from across the country to Costa Rica, Galapagos, Japan and South Africa to complete a two-week study tour during which they learn about the environmental challenges each country faces. The program’s aim is to provide a unique and enriching experience for teachers and librarians, and equip them with learnings that will help them develop interdisciplinary, hands-on and solution-oriented educational approaches in their classrooms.

Program Overview
Funded by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), the Toyota International Teacher Program advances environmental stewardship and global connectedness in U.S. schools and communities.

The program to Costa Rica, a country dedicated to protecting its natural resources, will give educators an opportunity to explore environmental and cultural preservation, biodiversity and sustainability through a variety of site visits, discussions, lectures and hands-on activities. Program participants will have an opportunity to meet with local experts, visit schools and museums and experience the rainforest first-hand.

During their travels to San Jose, Guácimo, Sarapiquí and La Fortuna, the educators will participate in a variety of activities that highlight the relationship between Costa Rican history, culture and the environment. They will tour innovative sustainable agriculture projects at Earth University and engage in service projects at La Selva Biological Station, one of the most studied tropical rain forests in the world. Area experts will educate participating teachers on local development, agronomy and conservation practices. Other activities include learning about research methods at Earth University and visiting rural Costa Rican primary and secondary schools to observe classes and interact with teachers and students. All activities are aimed at exploring the role of environmental education in spreading environmental awareness.

To help bridge their Costa Rican experiences with the curriculum projects, the educators will be accompanied by 2009 Toyota International Teacher Program alumnus, Jason Shields. As an on-site Discussion Leader, Jason will provide support and mentorship, facilitating several group debriefs and activities throughout the study tour to stimulate creative thinking among the participants.

Representing 20 states, the 26 participating teachers were chosen through a competitive, merit-based process administered by IIE, the nation’s most experienced nonprofit educational exchange organization. Selection criteria include professional qualifications, evidence of interest in international education, and feasibility of incorporating the study experience into the curriculum.

The Toyota International Teacher Program values diversity and encourages educators of all backgrounds, subjects and school types to apply for future program dates. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, employed full-time as a secondary classroom teacher or teacher-librarian (grades 7-12) and have a minimum of three years teaching experience. Rugged Toyota 4Runner Offers New Audio Systems for 2012; Toyota Entune™ Services Available

The Toyota 4Runner, the fifth generation of this rugged, full-capability SUV, enters the 2012 model year with major audio and connectivity upgrades and available new automatic running boards. A keystone in the Toyota SUV lineup for 27 years, the 4Runner was named “Most Dependable Midsize Crossover/SUV” by J.D. Power & Associates in 2011.

For 2012, the 4Runner SR5 and Limited grades offer the convenience of newly available automatic running boards. The 4Runner SR5 and Trail models come with standard SiriusXM™ Satellite Radio capability with a 90-day trial subscription included, USB port with iPod® connectivity and hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth® wireless technology.

Standard for the Limited grade, and optional for all other 4Runner models, a new display-type audio system incorporates today’s most in-demand connectivity features. Those offered are navigation, Toyota Entune™ services, XM Satellite Radio (with 90-day trial subscription), HD Radio with iTunes® tagging and text/e-mail-to-speech. The Toyota Entune system is a collection of popular mobile applications and data services, with three years of complimentary access. Once the smart phone is connected to the vehicle using Bluetooth wireless technology or a USB cable, Entune’s features are operated using the vehicle’s controls or, for some services, by voice recognition. Entune offers mobile apps for Bing™, iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable®, and Pandora®. Entune data services include a fuel price guide, sports scores, stocks, traffic and weather.

The 4Runner combines rugged body-on-frame construction with suspension technology that yields ride comfort more often associated with car-based platforms. The 2012 4Runner is available in a variety of configurations and in three models: a well-equipped SR5, top-of-the-line Limited, plus a Trail grade for maximum off-road capability. Optional third-row seats allow for up to seven-person capacity.

Drivetrain configurations include rear wheel 4x2, part-time 4x4 and full-time multi-mode 4x4 with a locking center differential. All models are equipped with a 4.0-liter 270-horsepower V6 teamed to a five-speed ECT-i automatic transmission.

Performance and Efficiency
The 4Runner 4.0-liter V6 generates 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. of torque. Dual independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) optimizes torque across the engine’s operating range. Fuel economy ratings rival some car-based SUV-type vehicles at 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway for 4x2 models (22 mpg highway for 4x4). Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds, with 4Runner’s standard integrated tow hitch receiver and wiring harness.

Handling and Ride
A double-wishbone independent front suspension, combined with a variable-flow rack and pinion steering, help give the 4Runner precise control on demanding roads. Coil springs over gas shocks are used at all four wheels for a comfortable ride and controlled handling. The four-link rear suspension minimizes axle hop and assures a smooth ride for rear seat passengers.

The Limited grade comes standard with an X-REAS suspension system that further improves performance, comfort and control. X-REAS automatically adjusts the damping force of shocks when driving over bumpy surfaces, or when cornering. The system uses a center control absorber to cross-link shocks on opposite corners of the vehicle, substantially reducing pitch and yaw by offsetting opposing inputs. With X-REAS the 4Runner corners flatter, smoother, and handles choppy pavement more easily.

4x4 Capability Designed-In
The 4Runner SR5 and Trail 4x4 models have a two-speed part-time four-wheel-drive system with neutral position. The 4Runner Limited is equipped with a full-time, four-wheel-drive system with a locking center differential and a three-mode, center console-mounted switch. The A-TRAC traction control system is standard equipment on all 4x4 models. The system can distribute driving force to any one wheel in contact with the ground, making terrain irregularities and slippery patches transparent to the driver. An electronic-locking rear differential is standard on the Trail grade.

The Trail grade offers Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) as an option. KDSS significantly improves terrain-following ability by dynamically disconnecting stabilizer bars to allow for more axle travel, and better suspension articulation in slow, difficult terrain.

Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature is standard on the Trail grade. The system helps maintain an appropriate speed to keep the vehicle under control and minimizes the load on drivetrain and suspension components. With the transfer case shifted into low range, CRAWL regulates engine speed and output (along with braking force), to propel the vehicle forward or in reverse at one of the five driver-selectable low-speed settings. This allows the driver to maintain focus while steering over rough level ground or steep grades, without having to also modulate the throttle or brake pedals.

The Trail grade also features a Multi-Terrain Select system that dials in wheel slip control to match the terrain. In loose terrain such as mud and sand, more-than-normal wheel slip is permitted, allowing wheel-spin to work in the vehicle’s favor. On bumpy moguls, or solid rock, wheel slip is minimized and the system acts more like a limited slip differential. The Mogul setting is for any extremely uneven terrain, such as V-ditches, slopes, and ridges, uphill or down.

All 4Runner 4x4 models feature standard Downhill Assist Control (DAC). This feature augments the low-speed ascending ability of low-range by helping to hold the vehicle to a target speed with no driver intervention. All models also come standard with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), which provides additional control for off-road driving by helping to hold the vehicle stationary before starting on a steep incline or slippery surface.

Exterior Styling
All 4Runner grades feature rugged bumpers and wide fender flares. Aluminum alloy wheels are 17-inches in diameter on SR5 and Trail grades and 20 inches on the Limited, and include a full size spare. The front end’s square fender flares meld with a muscular profile that links with a beefy rear bumper and back door. In addition to its distinctive grille, the SR5 grade also features overfenders to help tackle inclement weather and off-road conditions. A roof rack comes standard.

The Trail grade is designed to maximize off-road performance with superior approach and departure angles, high ground clearance, and an array of functional upgrades for the most demanding active outdoor enthusiast. The Trail model is distinguished by a unique hood scoop, unique 17-inch wheels, black side mirrors, front and rear bumper guards and dark smoke treatment on the head lamps and tail lamps.

The Limited and SR5 grades feature a chrome-plated grille insert, fog lamp bezel and front bumper molding. Front and rear overfenders and side skirts are color-keyed. The side molding, roof rack and rear bumper are also chrome trimmed. The SR5 and Limited grades have supplementary turn signals in the side mirrors, along with puddle lamps.

Safety
The standard Toyota Star Safety System™ includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control (TRAC), an Anti-Lock Brake System with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. VSC helps the driver to ensure control by compensating for front and rear wheel slip. The system uses selective braking and modulated engine output to help keep the vehicle in line with the driver’s steering inputs. On 4x2 vehicles, the Auto LSD (Limited Slip Differential) system allows for better traction on slippery sections of roadway. The four-wheel ABS with EBD provides the 4Runner with optimal brake proportioning, regardless of vehicle load.

A system of eight standard airbags includes front, side-mounted and knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, and side curtain airbags for the second and third row. All 2012 4Runners have active headrests for driver and passenger, and three-point seat belts for all seats.

The 2012 4Runner Limited offers the new Safety Connect™ telematics system. Available by subscription, with or without the optional navigation system, Safety Connect offers four safety and security features: Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Roadside Assistance. When Safety Connect is ordered, it includes a one-year trial subscription.

In case of either airbag deployment or severe rear-end collision, an Automatic Collision Notification system is designed to automatically call a response center. If a response agent cannot communicate with the occupants, the agent can contact the nearest emergency-services provider to dispatch assistance. Pushing the in-vehicle “SOS” button allows drivers to reach the response center to request help in an emergency as well as for a wide range of roadside assistance needs. If a 4Runner equipped with Safety Connect is stolen, agents can work with local authorities to help locate and recover the vehicle.

A rear clearance sonar system is standard on SR5 models, and a rear-view monitor system is standard on Limited and Trail grades and optional on the SR5. The system displays in the rear-view mirror or navigation screen (if equipped), helping to keep track of hard-to-see objects to the rear of the vehicle.

Comfort and Convenience
A bright, highly visible instrument panel houses speedometer, tachometer, voltage, fuel and coolant temperature gauges, plus a combination meter that offers multiple functions. An Eco-Driving feedback system allows the driver to monitor fuel consumption in real time. On 4Runner Trail, an overhead console within easy reach organizes the off-road control switches into one location. A compass indicator and outside temperature display add functionality. A manual air conditioning system is standard on SR5 and Trail grades; the Limited features an automatic dual zone climate control system.

For second-row passengers, a sculpted front seat-back shape provides additional knee space. The second-row seats, which include a center armrest, individually recline up to 16 degrees in four steps. Third-row seating features a roomy, supportive seating area. A 40/20/40 second-row seat configuration with a one-touch walk-in function makes access to the third row easier.

A rich leather-trimmed interior comes standard on 4Runner Limited and is optional on SR5. Graphite and Sand Beige fabric is standard on SR5. The Trail models are equipped with graphite color water-resistant fabric seats.

Versatility and Convenience
Fold-flat second-row rear seats provide a level load floor in the 4Runner, and it is not necessary to remove the headrests to fold the seats flat. The available third-row seat is split 50/50 and folds flat, as well. The seats can be folded from the side, or at the rear, using separate one-touch levers. With this new arrangement, more cargo space is available without removing seats, and longer items can be conveniently carried.

A Smart Key system featuring keyless entry with push-button start is standard on the Limited grade. The system allows the driver to unlock or start the vehicle by carrying the keyless remote. The cargo door window has jam control, like the moonroof and power side windows. An available pull-out cargo deck is capable of carrying up to 440 pounds, to make loading heavy items easier and to provide seating for tailgating and campsite relaxation. For models with the sliding deck, a 6.4-liter capacity storage box behind the rear seat provides additional storage.

The Limited grade offers an available JBL® premium system with navigation, featuring a six-disk in-dash CD changer and 15 speakers. The navigation system includes a large seven-inch monitor.

Standard on all audio systems is a unique “party mode” audio setting that is ideal for tailgating, raises bass response and shifts sound balance to the rear of the vehicle. Party mode is in addition bolstered by rear liftgate-mounted speakers, which function with or without party mode selected.

Limited Warranty
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation. Toyota dealers have complete details on the limited warranty. The 4Runner will also come standard with Toyota Care, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Roy Exum: Ten Air Bags Really Work

Exactly one week ago Kim Smith purchased a 2012 Toyota Camry from Capital Toyota in Chattanooga and was told when she bought the shiny red car that it was the first generation of the most popular car in America to be equipped with 10 different airbags as standard equipment. Hours later, as she then drove her new car home, Kim was stopped at an intersection when she found out how tremendously important that is.

With just 54 miles on her Toyota’s odometer, the 36-year-old Electric Power Board employee watched in complete horror as a Chevrolet Trailblazer – completely airborne - was being hurled directly at the front of her brand-new car with unbelievable force.

“There are no words to describe it,” she said yesterday, “but there is no doubt the car saved my life.

”Another driver was approaching a busy intersection on Sand Mountain early last Wednesday night and apparently fell asleep, running through the stop sign at Highway 301, just up the mountain from Trenton, Ga. When his van plummeted through the intersection, he hit the 3,000-pound Chevrolet SUV broadside and the force of the impact literally launched the second car high into the air.

“Oh, gosh, I was shocked! I was completely stopped, wearing my seat belt,” Kim said. “I heard the first wreck but then the second car came right at me through the air, landing right on the front of the Camry’s hood. It was like a big explosion.

”The instant Kim’s car was struck, all 10 airbags deployed – those located at knee level keeping her legs from being crushed – and, when she finally opened her front door, she got out of her badly-mangled but still brand-new Toyota without so much as a scratch.

This isn’t an advertisement for the newest generation of Camry that Toyota has just unveiled but Lord knows it should be. In a day when too many of us take air bags and safety features for granted, Kim Smith is a walking testament to the fact the 2012 Camry, which was just redesigned with safety as the foremost concern, did exactly what it was made to do at the huge plant in Georgetown, Ky.

“Oh yes, the highway patrolman and the sheriff’s officer both told me if I had been driving my 4-Runner, which I had just traded in, I would have been in bad shape. Thank goodness the other two drivers weren’t badly hurt but all of us are still bruised up. The airbag that saved my legs left my ankle pretty blue.”

Asked if she was getting another Camry, the Henagar, Ala., native laughed and said, “Are you kidding? Only this time I am getting a silver Camry instead of red. I don’t have anything against red but I’d rather not be reminded of what just happened.

“When the Trailblazer hit my car, it kind of bounced off to the side but part of its luggage rack came through the windshield on the passenger side. I was by myself but I don’t think if anybody had been sitting in the seat they would have gotten hurt. The windshield was shattered but there wasn’t any glass inside the car at all.

”How about the airbags?

“When (salesman) Alfred Odister sold me the car, I’m sure he told me about all the safety features – he was great - but, honestly, there was so much to absorb I can’t remember about the air bags. The firemen who were at the wreck told me they counted 14 that went off but some come in sets, I was told,” the personable woman explained.

“I got one of the very first 2012 models so I am waiting for Capital Toyota to get a silver one. When I left the dealership the car had 24 miles on the odometer so I just got to drive it about 30 miles but I really liked it,” she laughed.

“I’m just thankful I was driving it instead of my 4-Runner and that no one was badly hurt."

Ed Emerson, the sales manager at Capital Toyota, said Toyota executives are working to expedite a new replacement Camry for the unfortunate buyer.

“We have been told this new generation Camry is the first to ever earn a five-star safety rating but this proves it. I think we were as shocked as Kim was when we heard what happened. The safety features are really awesome but, please, they don’t need to be tried out!”

TMC Exhibits Biotechnology and Greening Technologies

Toyota City, Japan, October 3, 2011—Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) today held an event at its Toyota Biotechnology and Afforestation Laboratory in Aichi prefecture to showcase technologies developed there as part of its biotechnology and afforestation businesses. Technology on display included a newly developed yeast that increases the production yield of cellulosic ethanol bio-fuel, new technologies for the greening of parking lots and walls, and a new “cool-spot creation technology” for simulating and analyzing the effects of greening.

Development status of bio-fuels (cellulosic ethanol)
TMC, through the use of gene recombination technology, has recently developed a new strain of yeast that will play an important role in the fermentation process for producing cellulosic ethanol.

Fermentation of xylose, one of the sugars produced when plant fibers are broken down in the enzymatic saccharification process, is normally difficult to achieve with naturally occurring yeasts. However, TMC’s newly developed yeast is not only highly efficient at fermenting xylose but also highly resistant to such fermentation-inhibiting substances as acetic acid.  As a result, the yeast has achieved one of the highest ethanol fermentation density levels in the world* (approximately 47 g/liter), and is expected to improve bio-fuel yield and significantly reduce production costs.

TMC, with the goal of reducing CO2 emissions and responding to the growing need for diverse sources of energy, is working on developing renewable energy sources such as bio-fuels in addition to its work in developing next-generation environment-friendly vehicles. TMC is focusing on cellulosic ethanol, which is produced from non-edible plants that have significantly less impact on world food supplies. Research is underway on developing comprehensive technologies for the various processes involved in producing cellulosic ethanol, including raw material pretreatment, enzymatic saccharification and yeast fermentation. Aiming to achieve production-cost parity with other liquid fuels such as gasoline, TMC is striving to achieve a stable supply of raw-material plant fibers as well as technologies that reduce production costs.

Ultimately, TMC plans to further improve bio-fuel production yield and to cooperate with energy companies to realize its goal of commercializing cellulosic ethanol by 2020.
New technology for urban greening and greening-effect simulation
To aid in reducing the effects of urban heat-island phenomenon, TMC has been working on urban greening products, of both the rooftop and indoor variety. Two newly developed urban greening products—"Smart Green Parking", for the greening of parking areas, and a new wire-based "Smart Green Wall”—will be sold through Toyota Roof Garden Corporation, starting today. TMC hopes to meet a wider range of urban greening needs through this expansion of its greening product line.

TMC’s Toyota Biotechnology and Afforestation Laboratory is also developing "cool-spot creation technology" for simulating the effects of greening and predicting the cooling effects of shade and transpiration created by trees.  TMC, in conjunction with Tokyo Institute of Technology, developed a method of accurately measuring the amount of transpiration from trees and is building a model for predicting the surface temperature of trees. Through use of this model together with thermal environmental simulators, TMC aims to achieve a visual simulation of greening effects that can determine the types, numbers, and positioning of trees needed to achieve the desired cooling effect. This cool spot formation technology is aimed for commercialization by the end of 2012.

Going forward, TMC plans to link its urban greening technologies and products with smart grids that will become key in building the cities of the future.  By doing so, TMC hopes to enhance the functionalities of its greening systems and promote them widely to help build low-carbon houses and cities.
